Salvador and Dencyber are two very loving parents who want the best for their family. When they found out about the chance to apply for housing through Housing Choices Coalition from their San Andreas Regional Center service provider, it was a decision they couldn't refuse. They were renting a house in Sunnyvale, but were in need of affordable housing and did not feel comfortable letting their kids play by themselves in their front yard. In July, they decided to move into a brand-new apartment in the Rivertown complex, a project built by the Housing Authority as affordable housing, with twenty-five units set aside for people with developmental disabilities.
Salvador and Dencyber have three children, Salvador, Jr., Bonnybell, and Leelybell, who has had seizures since she was three months old. Their children love their new apartment. They are experiencing more freedom since they are allowed to run around the complex safely. Their children have also made many new friends in the complex. Dencyber says she feels much safer in this complex, "I don't have to worry about my children playing outside anymore. I can see them from right outside our window." She also finds Rivertown to be a very homey environment and that new kids are constantly coming over and having dinner with their family. Dencyber and Salvador have also made new friends with some of their neighbors.
Leelybell's family enjoys walking at malls, going to the movies and getting ice cream together. Like many families in the Bay Area, despite the high cost of housing they have dreams of someday owning their own house. Salvador says that this opportunity is making their dream more possible. Their current goal is to be able to buy a house by next year.
