Imagine... Your income is $812 a month and you are looking for a place to live that is safe and decent.
Now imagine that the average two-bedroom rent in the San Jose area is $1,821.
That is the sad reality for people with developmental disabilities.
In San Jose, you need to make at least $73,000 a year to afford a typical two-bedroom apartment.
A person with a developmental disability makes just over $9,000 a year- a mere 12% of what it takes to afford to live in this area.
This is a frightening situation.
We are making a real difference in the housing crisis, in the least affordable region in California!
Looking forward, we are working on many exciting new projects.
But, we need your help to fulfill our mission of enhancing the lives of the almost 9,000 people with developmental disabilities living in the counties served by Housing Choices.
Most are living at home with aging parents or in group-home residences.
They long for lives with more independence.
Without help, they will never be able to have their own homes or participate fully in their community.
The work of Housing Choices is not optional - it is vitally needed.
